Healthy milk teeth are important to your baby's overall health. Milk teeth maintain the proper space for permanent teeth and also provide a guide for permanent teeth eruption. Milk teeth are needed for development of clear speech and chewing of food, aiding the overall growth of the child.

Care of milk teeth

  • Even before your baby sports his first tooth, it's a good idea to get into the habit of wiping his gums with gauze. Simply wrap the cloth or gauze around your index finger and rub it gently over the gums.

  • Bacteria in the mouth usually can't harm the gums before the teeth emerge, but it can be hard to tell when the teeth are starting to push through, so you'll want to start early. Getting your baby used to having his mouth cleaned as part of his daily routine should make it easier to transition into tooth brushing later on.

  • Start cleaning your baby's teeth twice a day as soon as the first tooth appears. Until your child is 1 year old, you can use a wet washcloth or gauze to clean your baby's teeth and gums. At about a 1 year to 18 months of age, you should start using a soft baby toothbrush and a small dab of toothpaste

  • Refrain from sugared food; eat more of calcium rich food like banana and milk. Do not put the child to sleep with milk bottle in the mouth.
Dental sealants

HELPS PREVENT TOOTH DECAY IN YOUR CHILDS TEETH. PAINLESS, NO DRILLING, REQUIRES LESS THAN 5 MIN. PER TOOTH

  • A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by "sealing out" plaque and food.

  • Sealants are easy for your dentist to apply, and it takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth.

  • As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and usually last several years before a reapplication is needed. During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.
Fluoride

ALMOST LIKE A VACCINE TOWARDS TOOTH DECAY

  • Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.

  • Fluoride is found in food and in water. It is also found in fluoridated toothpastes and mouth rinses.

  • A dentist applies a layer of concentrated fluoride to the teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. This treatment contains a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Fluoride is applied to the teeth for 1 to 4 minutes via a mouth guard. This helps avoid decay for ensuing 6 months. This procedure is done 6 monthly from 6-13 years of age.

  • Adults too benefit from fluoride

  • In addition, people with certain conditions may be at increased risk of tooth decay and would therefore benefit from additional fluoride treatment. They include people with:

    • Dry mouth conditions

    • History of frequent cavities

    • Presence of crowns and/or bridges or braces

    • History of root caries.

Habits

THUMB SUCKING

  • It gives the child sense of security and should be gently discouraged till the age of 4 yrs. After this it should be discouraged by giving rewards for good behavior. Bandaging the finger or coating it with bitter substances may help.
  • If this doesn't work, a dentist may give habit breaking appliance which when worn does not create suction thus depriving the child from the pleasure of sucking and eventually the habit is broken. The dentist can help children who lip suck or tongue thrust in a similar way.
Braces

  • Between the ages of 10-16 years a child is a right candidate for braces, to set in line malaligned teeth. Today braces are not the metal look but ceramic braces that appeal cosmetically, lingual braces and latest invisilgn.

TO CONCLUDE, HEALTHY TEETH LEAD TO BEAUTIFUL SMILES, SO LET’S KEEP THE CHILD’S SMILEY ON.
